Green Bay is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various initiatives aimed at promoting clean energy, restoring natural habitats, and conserving water resources.
Advancing Clean Energy
The City of Green Bay has set an ambitious goal to transition to clean energy sources both community-wide and in city operations by 2050. This objective was established in the Clean Energy Green Bay Plan (CEGB), which was passed by the Green Bay Common Council in December 2023. The plan outlines recommendations through 2030 to set a path toward achieving the 2050 goal. As part of this commitment, the city has installed solar panels on Green Bay Fire Station #5 and in Leicht Park, with plans for additional solar installations on other city facilities to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.
Restoring Natural Habitats
The Green Bay Conservation Corps, Wisconsin’s first municipal conservation corps program, has been instrumental in habitat restoration efforts. In 2025, the Corps treated over 300 acres of parkland, removing nearly 7,724 gallons of invasive plant material and installing more than 14,000 native plants. These efforts aim to improve habitats for wildlife and enhance pollinator corridors throughout the city. Additionally, the Corps launched the Roving Crew Program to expand restoration services to partner organizations within a 60-mile radius of Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, fostering a more comprehensive environmental impact.
Conserving Water Resources
Recognizing the importance of water conservation, Green Bay is actively engaged in projects to balance urban development with watershed health. The city is working with local and national partners on the Connect the Bay project near the mouth of the Fox River. This initiative aims to protect the shoreline, restore wildlife habitats, and provide new recreational opportunities for residents. Furthermore, the city has embarked on the East River Flood Solutions project to develop nature-based flood management strategies, with plans to restore wetlands in East River Emilie Park to reduce flood risk and restore natural habitats.
These initiatives reflect Green Bay’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, ensuring a healthier and more resilient community for future generations.
