Green Bay is actively pursuing environmental sustainability through a series of initiatives aimed at promoting clean energy, restoring wetlands, and conserving water resources.
Clean Energy Initiatives
In December 2023, the Green Bay Common Council approved the Clean Energy Green Bay Plan, setting a goal to transition to clean energy sources both community-wide and in city operations by 2050. This plan includes recommendations through 2030 to pave the way toward achieving this objective. As part of this commitment, the city has installed solar panels on Green Bay Fire Station #5 and in Leicht Park, with plans for additional solar installations on other city facilities to reduce energy costs and meet clean energy targets. Wetland Restoration Efforts
Recognized as the world’s largest freshwater estuary, the Green Bay region is vital for various bird species and wildlife. The city is collaborating with partners to restore 6,500 acres of coastal wetlands and protect endangered species like the Great Lakes Piping Plover. These efforts aim to enhance habitat quality and support biodiversity in the area. Read about the Green Bay Restoration project.
Water Conservation and Management
Green Bay is actively engaged in green stormwater infrastructure projects and environmental restoration to balance urban development with watershed health. Initiatives like the Connect the Bay project focus on protecting shorelines, restoring habitats, and providing recreational opportunities. Additionally, the city is working on nature-based flood management strategies for the East River and Baird’s Creek to reduce flood risks and restore natural habitats. Through these comprehensive efforts, Green Bay demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, aiming to create a healthier and more resilient community for current and future generations.
